Times Union Male Athlete of the Week: Griffin Woodell

Griffin Woodell has spent September and October suffering in silence, watching his beloved New York Giants struggle each week. In turn, the senior running back from Glens Falls has made Section II Class B foes suffer his wrath.

Woodell, a four-year starter, may not be experiencing victories through his favorite NFL squad, but he certainly has done everything within his power to keep Glens Falls at the top of the heap in Class B.

Saturday afternoon, Woodell carried the ball 14 times for 258 yards and five touchdowns in the first half as the Indians blanked Scotia 48-0.

"This year, I am the strongest and fastest I've been," Woodell said.

For his efforts, Woodell has been selected as the Times Union's Male Athlete of the Week for the period Oct. 4-10.

Woodell's performance against the Tartans pushed him past the 1,000-yard plateau in just five games. Glens Falls (4-1 overall, 2-0 Class B North), ranked No. 12 in the state, next faces Gloversville (4-2, 1-0) in an important divisional contest.

"They are definitely standing out this year, so we'll see how things go Friday night," Woodell said of the Huskies.

Standing out is something Woodell has made quite a habit of all season. Against Scotia, he scored on touchdown runs covering 47, 68, 9, 29 and 12 yards, respectively, to stake the Indians to a 41-0 halftime advantage.

Woodell commended the work turned in by the offensive line, not only against Scotia but for the entire season. The senior rambled for 326 yards and six touchdowns against Schalmont in a 40-14 victory. Overall, he has run the ball 95 times for 1,048 yards and 18 touchdowns.

"In years past, we've had bigger kids up front," Woodell said. "These guys are definitely making holes. They are blocking well, especially being outweighed."
