When two masked, armed intruders broke into his North Carolina house early Saturday morning, a 12-year-old boy reached for a gun himself.
Police responded to the Goldsboro apartment around 1 a.m. Saturday and found Linda Ellis, 73, with an apparent gunshot wound and, at a nearby intersection, 19-year-old Khalil Herring, who had also been shot, according to the Goldsboro Police Department.
Both were hospitalized, but Herring was pronounced dead from his injuries.
Ellis was treated for non-life threatening injuries and is in stable condition.

Police believe that Herring was one of two men who “forced their way in” and demanded money from the apartment residents before shooting Ellis.
The 12-year-old, who has not been publicly identified, fired at the robbers, sending them fleeing out of the house, according to police.
Officials said the boy was acting in self-defense and is not expected to face charges.
His relationship to Ellis is unclear.
The Goldsboro Police Department told the Daily News there were no updates Sunday morning, including information about the second suspected intruder.
